Football fans in Brazil and across South America will tune in as Palmeiras and Flamengo go head-to-head for glory in the Copa Libertadores final at the Estadio Monumental “U” on Saturday. Both sides met at this stage of the continental showpiece back in 2021, with Palmeiras clinching the title in a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Following weeks of mediocre results, Palmeiras will need to be at their best on Saturday as they look to secure their fourth Copa Libertadores title.
Thanks for the submission!
A 3-2 defeat against Gremio in midweek left Abel Ferreira’s men without a win in any of their last five matches (2D 3L), a run which has seen them fall five points off the top of the Brasileiro Serie A standings.
While Palmeiras have struggled back at home in recent weeks, they have enjoyed success on the continental scene this season, finishing first in Group G of the Libertadores before knocking out Universitario, River Plate and LDU Quito en route to the final.
Like Saturday’s opponent, Flamengo enjoyed a solid group-stage run in the Libertadores, finishing level on 11 points with LDU at the top of Group C, before seeing off Internacional, Estudiantes, and Racing Club to book their spot in the final.
Filipe Luis’ side are also well on course to do the double this season, as they sit top of the Serie A standings with 75 points from 36 games, five points clear of Palmeiras heading into the final two matches.
Flamengo will be backing themselves to clinch the continental crown on Saturday as they take on an opposing side who have failed to win seven of their last eight meetings, losing four and claiming three draws since July 2023.
