Ed Orgeron has disclosed that he’s open to returning to LSU by taking a role as an assistant under Lane Kiffin this offseason if the call comes in. Kiffin, who was hired by the Tigers as the program’s 26th coach earlier this month to replace Brian Kelly, is a long-term friend of Orgeron.
In his appearance on “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast on Tuesday, Orgeron noted that he still hasn’t heard a peep from Kiffin on a possible return to Baton Rouge. Orgeron, who led LSU to the national championship in 2019, left the program in 2021 and hasn’t been on the sideline since then.
Thanks for the submission!
“He had asked me, he called last year, he was going to get (another) job, and he wanted to know if I wanted to (join him on staff). I said: ‘You know what, I’m not ready yet,’” Orgeron said. “He had called (recently), he said: ‘What do you think about LSU?’

“And I gave him nothing but rave reviews. But it never came through, like he never called and said, ‘Do you want to come?’ I never called him and said, ‘I want to go.’ He knew I was planning to get back into coaching. Would LSU be a good fit with him? Do I think so? Yes.”
Ed Orgeron disclosed late in October that he would love to return to LSU as the head coach as the Tigers intensified their search for Kelly’s replacement. With the role now filled, he’s not ruling out taking an assistant role in Baton Rouge ahead of the 2026 season.
Lane Kiffin disclosed how he imitated Ed Orgeron after he arrived in Baton Rouge
Lane Kiffin disclosed in his introductory press conference the call he had with Ed Orgeron as he tried to imitate the coach after he touched down in Baton Rouge. Kiffin slipped into a thick Cajun drawl, known with Orgeron, as he felt the emotion around the program.
“We were going by Tiger Stadium. … I called Ed Orgeron, I said, ‘Hey, man, this place just makes me want to talk like you right now,’ (and) I did,” Kiffin said. “We were in the car, and the kids were in there, and … the coaches (where like,) ‘What are you doing?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know. I’m like, channeling Ed right now.
“I was like, ‘I’m feeling him. Like, I rolled down the window, and I was like, ‘Go Tigahs!’ to the fans. So I called Ed, I said, ‘I don’t know what’s going on, man, but I’m feeling you right now.’”
Without a doubt, the call was an indication that Lane Kiffin had Ed Orgeron in his mind on his arrival at LSU. It is to be seen whether the coach will be open to offering him a role on the Tigers’ defensive staff heading into 2026.
